INDIAN AGNIVEER SCHEME-SERVICE - 2 YEARS EXTENSION

Indian Agniveer Scheme Big Update 2026: 2-Year Service Extension Approved for 75% of Agniveers

A major announcement has brought new opportunities for Indian defence aspirants and serving Agniveers. On 4 November 2026, the Union Cabinet approved a significant change to the Agnipath Scheme, introducing an additional two-year engagement period for Agniveers who were previously expected to complete their service after four years.

This decision provides Agniveers with more time to serve the nation and another opportunity to join the regular Armed Forces.

1. What Is the Latest Agniveer Scheme Update?

Under the revised arrangement announced by the government:

  • 25% Agniveers: Will continue to be considered for regular enrolment based on merit, as originally envisaged.

  • Remaining 75% Agniveers: Will be offered an additional two-year engagement period after completing their initial four years.

  • Total Service Period: The engagement period can extend from four years to six years for those opting for the additional engagement.

  • Regular Enrolment Opportunity: After completing the additional two years, willing Agniveers will be offered an opportunity for enrolment as regular soldiers, subject to prescribed selection criteria.

This decision aims to provide a further pathway for Agniveers to continue their careers in the Indian Defence Forces.

2. Will Agniveers Receive a Higher Salary?

Yes. According to the government announcement, the additional two-year engagement period will include:

  • Higher remuneration.

  • Enhanced Seva Nidhi package.

  • Seniority benefits.

These changes are intended to recognise the contribution and experience gained by Agniveers during their service.

3. Why Has the Government Introduced This Change?

The Agnipath Scheme was introduced on 14 June 2022 to create a younger, fitter and technologically equipped military force.

After reviewing the performance of Agniveers over the past four years, the Defence Forces reported positive feedback regarding their:

  • Physical fitness and discipline.

  • Technical skills and adaptability.

  • Motivation and commitment.

  • Military training and operational preparedness.

Based on these evaluations and recommendations from the Defence Forces, the government approved the additional two-year engagement period.
